Coming out from behind the camera, so to speak.

Anyone that knows me well will tell you I’m quite a private person and enjoy being on the side of the camera that I am. However, I recognise the importance of showing my face every now and then, so in the spirit of “showing my face” I shared some insights into my practice with Jan Henderson and the team at Indesignlive. You can have a quick look below or read the full profile here: https://www.indesignlive.com/people/elizabeth-schiavello. A big thanks to Jan Henderson for her kindness and generosity of spirit.

Fixations 3

So here we are again. Fixated. This time in Adelaide and quite some time ago. What is it I’m seeing?

Colour plays a part here. The palette of this little scene reminds me, somewhat cringingly and somewhat fondly of a check shirt I wore in the nineties - blue, beige and brown. And I can’t resist a bit of yellow, divisive as it is as a colour.

From colour to texture - organic and manmade - rocks and stone, contrasting with the industrial elements of iron, steel and aluminium.

What else? Lines. Always lines. Lines of different widths and heights and orientations - repeating, crossing, meeting. Curved lines to interrupt the straight. Order in the chaos.

There’s a hint of pareidolia (google it) - though I’m never seeking it or deliberately framing for it.

Finally it’s the little reminders of the natural environment to soften the industrial hardness - soft clouds, palm tree and even a little shadow.

There’s just something about industry that draws me in as it did one of my favourite Australian painters and significant influencer of my work, Geoffrey Smart.

Marion Apartments by MOS Architects

Just down the lane off Gertrude from a favourite wine bar by the same name, the Marion Apartments by MOS Architects have been crafted by Lazcon Build from an old red brick warehouse. Shot back in June with styling by Jacquie Lazzarotto. I can imagine living here, although the proximity to Marion and Tamura Sake Bar suggests I’d be eating out a lot! And for the folk that know me well, yes, it’s my bike.

No brief, no intent, just seeing.

I love being behind my camera. It doesn't matter if I'm shooting for clients or for art - I love it. There is something special, however, about shooting for myself. No brief, no intent, just seeing. I like to do this between things to let of steam, if you like. I guess it is in lieu of international travel - this year anyway!

Khun by Yoo

During last year's trip to Thailand, I stayed in an up and coming area of Bangkok, Thonglor. It's a trendy little spot with great restaurants, cafes and shops. On one of my walks I stumbled across this sales office, yes, just a sales office. The Khun by Yoo sales office, along with the condos that will eventually stand there, were designed by Yoo in collaboration with Phillippe Starck. I see an elephant...

Wandering, searching.

Whenever I'm about to start a new body of work I like to ditch the tripod and wander. See Melbourne town through fresh eyes. Sometimes I'm looking for something in particular, sometimes nothing. I never take my car but I often find myself in a carpark. There's something in that. Don't know what. Yet. Here's a fairly incohesive sample.
